How Soon Can You Workout After Botox? Addressing the Science

Brandon Reynolds ·

Botox treatment is an enticing option for a lot of image-conscious individuals. These injections can help you achieve a youthful look and provide a much-needed boost of confidence. Botox also has some other medical uses, but it is most commonly used to smooth facial wrinkles. In fact, according to one study, over 4.5 million people received Botox treatments in a single year in the US alone. 6

If you are concerned enough about your appearance to pay for a Botox treatment, you probably have other systems in place to keep yourself looking good, such as a daily workout routine and a healthy diet.

You may be wondering how soon you can get back into the gym after Botox without compromising the effects of the treatment or causing yourself pain. For that reason, we have provided this article, where we’ll be covering the following topics:

  • What is botox?
  • Why you shouldn’t exercise directly after Botox
  • Other things you should avoid after receiving Botox injections
  • The right age for Botox
  • Whether there are any exercises, you can do after Botox.

Want to know more? Let’s see what science has to say.

What is Botox?

Botox is a drug that is made from a toxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. Strangely, it is the same toxin responsible for life-threatening botulism – a type of food poisoning. However, doctors use the drug to treat numerous health problems. These include:

  • Smoothing facial wrinkles
  • Chronic migraines
  • Severe underarm sweating
  • Cervical dystonia – a neurological disorder that causes painful muscle contractions in the neck and shoulder
  • Uncontrollable blinking (blepharospasm)
  • Overactive bladder
  • Misaligned eyes (strabismus)

When you receive Botox treatment, the drug weakens and paralyzes targeted muscles. It can also block specific nerves. For most forms of treatment, the effects last between three and twelve months.

There are some common side effects, which include pain, swelling, and bruising. You may also develop flu-like symptoms, an upset stomach, and headaches. Some people experience drooping eyelids after receiving injections in the face. 1

Why You Shouldn’t Exercise Directly After Botox

Unfortunately, most doctors would recommend that you do not exercise directly after exercise for three reasons:

Exercise puts Pressure on the Botox Injection Site

When you get Botox, your doctor will tell you not to touch your face for at least four hours. Studies have shown that if you add pressure to the injection site, your Botox can migrate to another part of the body. It is also recommended you refrain from touching your face.

Exercise Increases Your Blood Flow.

Vigorous exercise gets your heart pumping. While that is usually great for your cardiovascular system, it is strongly advised again if you have just had Botox treatment. An increased blood flow can cause Botox diffusion, moving the Botox away from the injection site and paralyze the surrounding muscles. This high blood pressure will eventually lead to bruising and swelling.

Exercise Requires a lot of Head Movement.

Following your Botox treatment, you should avoid moving your head too much; this can also make the Botox migrate from the injection site. This can happen even during very low-impact exercises like yoga. 2 3

Are There Other Things I Shouldn’t do After Getting Botox Injections?

When you go for your Botox treatment, your doctor should provide a list of things you can and cannot do following the procedure.

The most obvious one is not to touch your face. However, the list of things to avoid could also include: 2

  • Bending over
  • Lying down
  • Drinking too much caffeine
  • Consuming alcohol
  • Applying pressure to the sensitive area
  • Taking a hot bath or show
  • Using pain reliever that is known to thin your blood
  • Using machines or devices that cause excessive heat conditions (tanning beds, saunas, sun lamps)
  • Wearing makeup
  • Heading out in freezing temperatures
  • Sleeping on your face during the first night
  • Using tretinoin (Retin-A) products
  • Getting any other facial procedure done for at least two weeks
  • Getting a spray tan
  • Flying
  • Adding any pressure when washing your face
  • Wearing a show cop
  • Getting eyebrow treatment (waxed, tweezed, threaded)

What Exercises are Safe to Do After Botox?

Doctors recommend that you wait at least two days before exercising again. In those 48 hours, you should relax and focus on not compromising your Botox injections with silly mistakes.

However, some studies have shown that facial exercises can positively affect the appearance of wrinkles. As such, some doctors would say that light facial movements (such as smiling and raising your eyebrows) following your Botox treatment could help reduce wrinkles – as long as you don’t apply any pressure to the injection zones. 4 5

What Is the Right Age for Botox?

Botox is approved for anybody 18 years or older.

Most experts recommend that anybody between the ages of 25 – 35 is at the optimum age for preventative Botox treatment.

Additionally, there is no upper age limit for Botox injects. As a result, many people in their 60s and old receive the treatment and achieve favorable results.

Final Thoughts

Botox may do wonders when reducing wrinkles, but you should always stick to your doctor’s post-treatment advice.

As such, avoid any vigorous exercise or activity for at least 48 hours after your procedure. Not going to the gym may be difficult, especially if it forms an integral part of your daily routine, but the advice is there to keep you safe. As we have discovered, increased blood flow can cause all sorts of complications following your Botox procedure.

Follow your doctor’s orders, and you’ll be back at the gym within the week, looking younger and fresher than you do before your treatment.
